It’s hot times in ye olde Denmark. Alicia Vikander (THE DANISH GIRL, EX MACHINA) and Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, THE HUNT) star in this based-on-a-true story costume drama about the love triangle between a young queen, her mentally ill husband, and the court physician.
The good doctor (Mikkelsen) is a foreign-born commoner — and a champion of enlightenment and idealism in an age still steeped superstition and aristocratic control. Queen Caroline Mathilda (Vikander) is young, educated, and deeply unhappy in her marriage. Their forbidden love would inspire a revolution — it just doesn’t get more romantic than that.
Nikolaj Arcel - who co-adapted the screenplay for the original Swedish big screen version of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - directs a sumptuous period piece which snagged Golden Globe and Academy Award noms when it was released, but flew largely under the radar.
