Borg Vs McEnroe
The true story of an epic clash of icons and egos for the ages.
THE TRUE STORY OF TENNIS’ MOST LEGENDARY RIVALRY.
At the 1980 Wimbledon Tennis Championships, all eyes are on Swedish star Björn Borg. Dubbed “The Machine” for his powerful racquet arm and cool demeanor, Borg is on the cusp of a record-breaking 5th Wimbledon victory. The only player standing in his way: the incendiary and controversial American player John McEnroe. Dropped into the pressure cooker of the tournament, the two former world champs must face off in the press, in person, and on the court.
In the history of tennis, few rivalries can themselves rival that between Borg and McEnroe. BORG VS MCENROE brings that rivalry to life, with Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason as Borg and Shia LaBeouf as McEnroe. The two actors spent months in training to ensure their prowess on the court would match their skill onscreen, and the results are an intense sports drama of real authenticity.
BORG VS MCENROE opened the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and was nominated for ten awards at Sweden’s prestigious Guldbagge Awards. Directed in multiple languages by Sweden’s Janus Metz Pedersen (TRUE DETECTIVE, award-winning documentary ARMADILLO), it’s a clash of icons and egos for the ages.
“A psychological portrait of competition, friendship and a complicated, temperamental prodigy, whose outbursts and lack of self-control threaten to derail what promises to be a fruitful athletic career.” - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
