Master Pancake: SUSPIRIA (1977)
Master Pancake is the Alamo Drafthouse tradition of pairing questionable movies with live comedy! It’s smart, fast, and bust-a-gut funny. For this special Virtual Pancake John Erler and friends – Vanessa Gonzalez (Comedy Central, Just for Laughs) and Ralphie Hardesty (Queer Mountain, Moontower Comedy) – take on a classic Dario Argento film, the 1977 benchmark horror SUSPIRIA. Don’t miss out on Hallucinations! Maggot infestations! Phantasmic gore-slayings! Also, there will be a movie!
THE FILM SUSPIRIA stands as a monumental achievement in terror. If Argento had not directed another film, this alone would have cemented his position as a titan, a horror visionary. SUSPIRIA is a must-see and has influenced nearly all horror directors in its wake. (And if you haven’t seen it yet, track down Luca Guadadiño’s 2018 remake, which is pretty darned good too.)
Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered.
The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers a terrifying secret history that’s been kept hidden within ancient walls….
“One of the most visually ravishing horror films, SUSPIRIA stops at nothing to keep the audience in its grip.” - Mondo Digital
