Hey y’all, I’m Sarah, and when I’m not working as the Senior Director of Programming & Promotions for Alamo Drafthouse, I’m binging young adult fiction and swilling champagne.
Most of my favorite movies share a common theme: daring, dynamite ladies. I love fist pumping for strong women in documentaries (watch RAISE HELL: THE LIFE & TIMES OF MOLLY IVINS and meet your new hero) as much as I enjoy swooning while genuine, complicated gals fall in love (AMIRA & SAM is a gem of a romance that will make you laugh through your tears, i.e. the best emotion). Given my YA obsession, I’m also a sucker for coming-of-age stories like SLUT IN A GOOD WAY, which is an absolutely charming and sex-positive celebration of female friendship.
Beyond the land of ladies, documentaries are my kind of reality TV, especially when they surprise me (it seems impossible, but HAIL SATAN? makes The Satanic Temple even more fascinating than you can imagine) or when they submerse me in pop culture (KATE NASH offers a dynamic backstage look at sexism in the music industry).
But at the end of the day, if a film moves me, or if it makes me think, or if it makes me laugh my ass off, it doesn’t really matter what it’s about… and that’s the power of movies, right? Cheers to that!
